Awards Night

The team ended the season with awards on Monday night which included everyone with academic, letter, state, captain, most improved and most inspirational awards given out.
Our captains:

  • Aaron
  • Nash
  • Jacob
  • Sydney
  • Savannah
  • Sarah.
They had the privilege of handing out our 'most' awards, which are voted on by the team:
Most Improved -- DJ and Mariah
Most Inspirational -- Anika and Doyoung (pictured to right with coaches)

It was a special night for all, but we try to spotlight the seniors for a good send off, which included 14 of our athletes. Their leadership and determination will be missed in the years to come, but they have left a great impression and legacy on the younger athletes and the program as a whole. (Picture to left with their 'new' jerseys as a thank you)

One of our most prestigious awards is the Blackhawk Award (The Rock), which doesn't get to be handed out every year. This awards embodies our core ideas of team, leadership, and love of our sport. An athlete has to be committed and dedicated to receive this award. This year we had two athletes who fit with those from the past. They were Aaron and Savannah. (Picture to right)

We would like to wish the best of luck to Sanne who will be racing this weekend at BorderClash, which is a great event that puts the best runners from Oregon and Washington against each other at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Or.

Next up is our 3rd annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Morning, we hope you will be able to join us for this great event that sponsors the Cheney Food Bank and Cheney XC.

Once again we would like to thank everyone for a great season and support throughout. To our parents, you are a huge reason why we are so successful, all of your planning of social events makes this team better and the kids love it, we thank you. Also thank you to the community for your support.

Girls Team 2nd at State!

On Saturday the Cheney XC girls team brought home the highest finish in school history at the state meet by getting 2nd overall only behind Sehome. It was a highly competitive team battle in which only 18 points separated 2nd from 5th place. With the goal of getting a trophy the girls team was thrilled when it was announced they were 2nd after racing very well.

Once again the Blackhawks were led by Sanne who finished 3rd overall in 18:46 and earned her second trip to BorderClash were the top runners from Washington and Oregon race against each other. Continuing to run together in races Amie (20th 19:32) and Kinsey (22nd 19:35) capped off very strong seasons. After having a fast race last week Mariah (55th 20:26) finished off an impressive freshman season which saw a huge improvement from 24:00 at her first race of the year. Rounding out the top 5 scorers was Senior Captain Savannah (61st 20:34) in her last XC race in a Blackhawks jersey. Amanda (66th 20:39), running 6th for the Blackhawks had a strong showing improving her time from last year at state by 43 seconds. 1. Sehome -- 86
  2. Cheney -- 120
  3. Bellingham -- 134
  4. Interlake -- 136
On the boys side, the Blackhawks finished off an excellent season with good performances at the state meet finishing 12th overall as a team. This raced showed the parity at the 2A level with only 62 points separating 5th from 12th place. Having one of the best pack times of the race, 41 seconds, the Blackhawks continued to race well together. Leading the boys in his last XC race was Senior Captain Jacob (46th 16:51) racing with determination from the gun. Senior Captain Aaron (63rd 17:02) completed the season with great improvement from last year because of his off-season running. Just edged out by Aaron was Devon (64th 17:02) who also had a big summer and improved his time from last year at state by 29 seconds.  Running in his 4th XC State Championships Senior Captain Nash (67th 17:04) is in rare company and will be remembered for his fearlessness on the course. Finishing off the scorers for the Blackhawks and once again showing his improvement throughout the season, his first race was 19:38, was Corey (101st 17:31). Running 6th was Nick (129th 18:22) with a strong time for a freshman and 7th was James (134th 18:30) who has raced very hard all year long. Team standing:

GNL #3 -- WV, PUL,

On Wednesday the Blackawks had their third league meet of the year and traveled to East Valley to race on a very difficult course. Even though East Valley was in the race, we did not score against them because we already met at the Fairways two weeks ago.

The JV boys started off the meet racing very well in a tight pack again beating West Valley 25-33 and Pullman 17-46. The boys were led by Derek placing 3rd overall in a time of 19:31 followed by Spencer and Dakota in 4th and 5th respectfully. As a team the JV boys had their top 9 runners all within 52 seconds which is a great pack time.

The Blackhawks were led by Amie with a time of 21:14 to secure wins over West Valley and Pullman by perfect scores of 15-50. Others running well for the girls included Amanda in 6th overall with a time 22:03 and Mariah in 7th with a time of 22:29.

The most competitive race of the day was the Varsity Boys with all four teams evenly matched on paper. Running controlled through the first half, the Blackhawk Boys took over this race on the hill using their strength and patience. At the finish they were led by Devon, Aaron, and Jacob in 4th, 5th, and 6th respectfully all within 17 seconds of each other. Running well together Nick and Corey secured victories versus both Pullman 26-29 and West Valley 25-30.

Quincy Invite

The Blackhawks headed to The Gorge Amphitheater on Saturday to compete against the majority of the teams and the same course as the regional meet in 3 weeks. The weather was cool calm and cloudy, just about perfect for racing fast. Backwards from most races the varsity teams raced first with the girls setting the tone for the rest of the day.

Racing smart once again the Varsity Girls ran relaxed for the first half and moved up through the field in the second half, showing their top-end strength, and good depth. Led by Sanne and Kinsey going 1-2 with Amie 4th overall, the Blackhawks finished first as a team with 38 points to Ephrata's 64. Others racing varsity included Anika (16th) Savannah (17th) Amanda (21st) and Sydney (26th).

Up next was the Varsity Boys, who raced equally as well moving up in the last mile of the race. Led by Nash (6th overall), the top four boys raced as a pack and showed that their hard work is paying off; Devon finished (8th) with Jacob (9th) Aaron (13th) Nick (39th) Corey (53rd) and Spencer (59th). Overall they finished second to Deer Park, but are closing the gap every week, only losing by four points 69-73.

The Boys JV were next and had their best showing of the year so far placing first overall with 30 points ahead of 2nd place Deer Park with 57 points. Leading them were James (2nd) and Tom (3rd) earning Varsity spots for the next race. Also scoring for the boys were Dakota (7th) DJ (10th) and Kyle (11th).

To finish the day off the Girls JV raced in dominated fashion led by a 1-2 finish from freshman Mariah and Sarah respectfully. Also running for the girls were Katie (4th) and Johanna (5th).

Up next for the Blackhawks is the third league meet of the year at East Valley High School against West Valley and Pullman on Wednesday 13th. Having already raced East Valley the Blackhawks will only be scored against the other two schools. The season has flown by so far with only 3-4 weeks left for most runners.

Summer Running

Many of you are putting in some excellent work this summer. With only 3 weeks to go until practice starts keep it up. Here are some updates from the summer so far:

Flathead Running Camp: The girls team spent a wonderful week in Montana including 3 days at camp followed by a couple days at the Holland's homestead in a beautiful setting. They

Boy's Lake Campout: Since the girls got to go to MT, the guys wanted to do something as well, so out to the Hisaw's lake cabin for a few days. They enjoyed nonstop fun including an intense volleyball game, kayaking to Bunker's for milkshakes, and catching some crawdads.

Let's Climb A Mountain: Once again a guys team ran this relay from the Clocktower all the way to the top of Mt. Spokane. They did a great job in some harsh conditions; hot weather and a big climb. At the end they celebrated with a picnic and a great view.

Cherry Picker's/Toaster Run: We had a good showing at both of these races at Greenbluff and Deer Park. The kids enjoyed a birthday party and crossing the creek after these races.

Up Next: Practice Starts on the 23rd of August, make sure your paperwork is in before then else no practice for you. Reminder: there is a sports physical night on the 11th of August, get it done.
